WOBURN —Superintendent Matthew Crowley proudly shares that Woburn Memorial High School student Lucas Berg has been selected as a recipient of the Jeff Perotti LGBTQ+ Leadership Award.
Berg is just one of 10 students in the state to be presented with the award by the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ+ Youth this year. The award recognizes young leaders who have helped create school environments where LGBTQ+ youth feel safe, supported, and embraced, emphasizing the importance of student voices.
This year, Berg was also selected to serve on the Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Student Leadership Council, where he collaborates with peers from across the state to promote inclusive policies, amplify student voices, and strengthen school communities.
As part of this award, Berg will receive a $4,000 scholarship supporting his education beyond high school. Berg will be formally recognized during the Commission’s annual recommendations release ceremony on Thursday, May 28, at the Massachusetts State House.
A dedicated member of the Spectrum Club, the school’s gender and sexuality alliance, Berg has been a driving force in fostering a more inclusive and supportive school environment.
Through the Spectrum Club, Berg has been involved in planning events, leading discussions and delivering presentations to students and staff. Berg regularly volunteers at school and community events, including Future Tanner Night, where students were introduced to opportunities at Woburn High School.
At the City of Woburn Volunteer Expo, Berg engaged community members and encouraged participation in writing holiday cards for LGBTQ+ individuals who otherwise would not receive one.
Berg has also demonstrated strong leadership through his participation in the Social Capital Inc. Youth Grant Pitch Contest. In 2023, the team secured funding for a ‘You Can Play’ professional development session, helping coaches create more inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ student-athletes. In 2025, the team funded a Community Gala, a queer prom, designed to provide a safe and affirming space for students and allies.
“Lucas has been an extraordinary leader for the Woburn Memorial High School Spectrum Club and within the school community,” said Principal Thomas Qualey. “Through his advocacy, compassion, and commitment to inclusion, he has helped create a school environment where LGBTQ+ students feel seen, supported, and valued. Whether leading presentations, organizing events, or mentoring younger students, Lucas consistently demonstrates the courage, empathy, and leadership needed to create meaningful change both within our school and throughout the broader community.”
Berg plans to attend the University of Massachusetts Lowell next fall to pursue nursing.
