HAMPTON — Superintendent Lois Costa is pleased to announce that Hampton Academy students competed in the eighth-grade oratorical contest.
The contest was held on Friday, March 31, at the Hampton Academy auditorium, where 15 Hampton Academy students in Grade 8 showcased their oratorical skills.
Students developed their topics and skills in their ELA classes with teachers Jim Doherty and Judith Clark. The students recited their speeches in front of their peers, who then chose finalists.
Students were able to choose their own topics, which had to be of interest to them, and relevant to them in some way. Students were also responsible for doing research and finding data to support their speeches.
The speeches were judged by members of the Hampton Rotary and Lori Cotter, a retired Academy teacher, who began the Oratorical Contest when she taught at the Academy.
Ryan Rosberg was the winner. His speech — Envy, the Not So Deadly Sin, focused on the positives and negatives aspects of envy. He infused humor into his speech and related his experience at his former school before coming to Hampton Academy.
“Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the oratorical contest finals, and to Ryan for his victory,” said Superintendent Costa. “This event is important for showcasing the importance of U.S. history, as well as all that students have learned about in their social studies work, and we are proud of our students
