STONEHAM — The Stoneham Fire Department hired two new firefighters who will now under orientation and comprehensive training.
Firefighter Curtis Fothergill and Firefighter Peter Witwicki were sworn in by Town Clerk Maria Sagarino
Firefighter Fothergill grew up in Ohio, and served in the U.S. Navy for five years after high school. He served on the U.S.S. Portland, where he worked as a logistics specialist and trained in shipboard firefighting and aircraft crash and salvage. He worked as a sales associate and warehouse specialist in the private sector before moving to Stoneham.
Firefighter Fothergill is attending North Shore Community College, where he is studying Fire Science full-time while also working part-time as an Uber driver. He is currently completing his EMT certification.
Firefighter Witwicki graduated from Peabody High School, and has worked a several jobs, sometimes two or three at once, since then. He spent five years working for the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services, where he started in laundry and worked his way up to being a Service Worker, assisting individuals with developmental disabilities with daily living. He has also worked as a seasonal commercial lobster fisherman, and for the Town of Lexington Facilities Department.
Firefighter Witwicki is certified in Trauma Informed Care, Introduction to Positive Behavioral Support, Proactive Approach to Positive Behavioral Support, and is American Red Cross CPR/AED Certified.
Both firefighters start work on July 6. They will undergo a two-week orientation, followed by the 12-week Boston Metro Fire Academy. Upon completion of the Academy, they will be certified firefighters and will be assigned to a shift at Stoneham Fire.
“I’m pleased to welcome two new firefighters who bring a wealth of service and experiences to our department,” said Chief Matthew Grafton. “I look forward to seeing them graduate from the academy and begin their work as firefighters in our community.”
