STONEHAM — Superintendent David Ljungberg announces that School Committee Member David Maurer is retiring from the committee following 15 years of service.

Maurer’s term ended on Tuesday, April 4. Nicole Nial, who ran as an incumbent, won her seat again, and new member Megan Samborski began Wednesday, April 5.

Maurer began serving on the Stoneham School Committee in 2008. It was during this time that Stoneham Public Schools was experiencing a financial crisis which led to the discontinuance of several school programs and the district’s inability to retain staff.

Throughout these challenges, Maurer worked with the Stoneham School Committee to rebuild relationships between teachers and the school committee and contributed to the efforts to increase pay for teachers in the district. He worked to put once-discontinued programs back in place, emphasizing the importance of careful sustainability and growth.

“On behalf of the entire district, I would like to thank David Maurer for his dedication to the Stoneham School Committee over the past 15 years,” said Superintendent Ljungberg. “David’s contributions have helped improve the district as a whole and have benefitted our students and staff greatly. I wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

Maurer also championed the Stoneham Public Schools’ Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Program and assisted in the reinstatement of the Stoneham Public Schools music program.

Most recently, he took part in the Smart Storage for Guns project, championed by Erin Kennedy, where he worked alongside Stoneham Police Chief James McIntyre to educate parents about safe practices for gun storage.

“I want to thank my family for their unwavering support throughout my entire career,” said Maurer. “I also would like to also thank the citizens of Stoneham for having confidence in my abilities for the past 15 years. It has been a pleasure to serve the Stoneham community.”

Maurer and his wife Christine are the proud parents of two children, Tina and Billy, who are Stoneham High School graduates.

Maurer also served as chairman of the town’s Financial Policy Committee where he supported the revision of town financial policies in order to implement best practices toward town spending. These efforts resulted in the town securing a AA bond rating.
