WOBURN – Reeves Elementary School Principal Elizabeth Jolly is pleased to announce that Woburn first responders read to students for National Read Across America Day.

On Thursday, March 2, Woburn firefighters Lt. Nathan Driscol, Patrick Concannon, Robert Rafferty, Chad O’Clair and Woburn Police Sgt. Ian Hunt read to Reeves Elementary School pre-K-5 students as part of the event, which is an annual reading motivation and awareness campaign sponsored by the National Education Association.

Schools, libraries and communities nationwide recognize a weeklong celebration centered around March 2 (corresponding with Dr. Seuss’ birthday), with other programming throughout the year.

“This event shows our students how enjoyable reading can be outside of a traditional classroom setting,” Principal Jolly said. “We love any opportunity to get our students excited about reading and have them view it as a fun activity.”

The first responders read books such as “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister, “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss, “Harry the Dirty Dog” by Gene Zion and more. They spoke to students about the books that were read and answered questions regarding their service to the community.

“Being able to engage with students while potentially sparking a love of reading is something we are always happy to do,” Woburn Police Chief Robert Rufo said.

“We’d like to thank Principal Jolly and the Reeves Elementary School for inviting us to this event and specifically the students for making it such an enjoyable experience,”  Woburn Fire Chief Donald Kenton said.
