BLACKSTONE — As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, the Blackstone Public Library will be represented in Washington, D.C., at a historic convening of librarians from all over the country, with a special focus on helping libraries tell the American story through local engagement and civic education.

Lisa Cheever, director of the Blackstone Public Library, has been invited by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to attend “Library Convening 250: Telling America’s Story,” taking place June 10-12 in the nation’s capital.

The convening aims to inspire and empower librarians from small and rural libraries to participate in telling both the national and local American story, while making sure to engage audiences that are often overlooked. Through keynote speakers, panel discussions and hands-on breakout sessions, participants will explore ways to create meaningful programs at their hometown libraries in a manner that honors the nation’s history and strengthens civic understanding.

This educational and networking opportunity is fully funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Cheever said she is looking forward to the experience and bringing new ideas back home to the Blackstone community.

“Civic history and the American story are part of the rich tapestry our country’s past and future,” said Cheever. “Libraries play an important part in education and outreach for all individuals.”

Interim Town Administrator Lauren Taylor thanked Cheever for representing Blackstone in Washington, noting the importance of continued professional development opportunities for local library leaders.

“We are proud to see Lisa and the Blackstone Public Library represented at this national librarian event of such historical significance, as our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary,” said Taylor. “This opportunity reflects the important role libraries and librarians continue to play in connecting communities with history, education and civic engagement.”
