RANDOLPH — Chief Ronald Cassford reports that the Randolph Fire Department successfully knocked down a fire Monday night in a home on North Street.

Emergency crews received a call at 6:57 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, about a fire in the basement at 440 North St. The first firefighters on the scene found a fire in a trash basket that had extended to a mattress. Crews quickly knocked down the fire and confirmed there was no extension to the rest of the house.

The basement suffered a moderate amount of smoke and water damage, but the home remains habitable. There were no injuries.

Holbrook firefighters provided mutual aid at the scene. Crews from Avon, Braintree and Canton provided station coverage.

The fire was set accidentally, according to the Randolph Fire Department Investigation Unit.
