WAREHAM — Wareham High School (WHS) Student Council members recently welcomed the community into the school for their seventh annual Haunted Hallways event.

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, over 300 children and family members enjoyed an evening of Halloween fun hosted by the WHS Student Council, with assistance from National Honor Society (NHS) members and clubs.

About 50 WHS students participated in the event. Student Council members, clubs and teachers decorated stations throughout the school and handed out candy to trick-or-treaters, while NHS students hosted a spooky craft-making session in the cafeteria.

“The kids get very excited about doing this,” said Student Council Advisor Carolyn Gomes Vieira. “They love giving back, and they love looking at all the costumes and seeing the little kids. One parent commented that her child gets to see the ‘big kids school,’ and hopefully that interaction with students and staff from the high school makes it easier for the child when they transfer into it in a few years. A lot of the kids who participated this year also walked through these halls as a child in their costume just a few years ago, so when they heard that they could be the ones passing out candy, it made them very excited and happy.”

Representatives from Cranberry Credit Union also staffed a table at the event, and handed out coloring books and candy to attendees.

“I’m proud of the Student Council members and Advisor Carolyn Gomes Vieira for their hard work in organizing Haunted Hallways,” said Superintendent Dr. Amy Hartley-Matteson. “I’d also like to thank all of our additional student and staff volunteers, and the Cranberry Credit Union, for their time and assistance. These events mean a lot to the students who organize them, and we were grateful to have such a strong show of support from the community.”

In the days leading up to the event, teachers and students decorated classroom doorways, each with a unique theme of monsters, festive movies and more.

“There is always a sense of excitement leading up to the Haunted Hallways event,” said Principal Scott Palladino. “The creativity we see in the decorations, from the classroom doors to the stations throughout the halls, is always impressive. I’m grateful to see our students working together to host an event for the community’s enjoyment, especially because they have so much fun doing it.”
