Wenham Police Swear In New Officers and Supervisor; Recognize Retiree and Officers Who Saved a Dog

WENHAM – The Wenham Police Department appeared before the Select Board Tuesday night to swear in two new officers and a supervisor, to recognize a retiree, and to commend three officers who worked together to save a dog from a fire.

The Wenham Police Department believes in engaging with the community, and the Select Board added the swearing-in ceremonies and recognitions to their Tuesday agenda.

Chief Kevin DiNapoli introduced Officers Menardson Dumas and Matthew Kincade, and newly promoted Sgt. John Phillips before they were sworn in by Town Clerk Dianne K. Bucco.

Officer Dumas, who grew up in Billerica, is a recent graduate of the Municipal Police Training Committee’s Northern Essex Community College Police Academy.

Officer Kincade comes to Wenham with eight years of law enforcement experience gained while working with Boston University Police and Brookline Police. He has previous experience working as a detective and is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

Sgt. Phillips has served the Wenham community for nine years, and was selected for promotion by an independent firm, Public Safety Associates of Boxford. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Salem State University, and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Southern New Hampshire University.

Chief DiNapoli, colleagues, and the Select Board also recognized Sgt. Michael Mscisz, who recently retired from a more than 20-year career with the department.

Sgt. Mscisz joined the department as a Reserve Officer in 2004, became full-time in 2005, and was promoted to sergeant in 2014. The Select Board approved a request to allow Sgt. Mscisz to continue serving as a Special Police Officer — assisting with community events and major emergencies — during his retirement.

Chief DiNapoli also surprised three officers by presenting them with a Unit Citation in front of the Select Board.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, Officer Matthew Krikorian, Officer Marissa DeLucia, and Officer Menardson Dumas responded to a fire in a home in town. They confirmed that residents escaped the building, but learned that a pet dog was still inside.

Officer Dumas secured the scene while Officer DeLucia and Officer Krikorian entered the home, found the dog and brought it safely outside. Firefighters then arrived and extinguished the fire with no reported injuries.

“The calm handling of this situation, effective communication, and commitment to the welfare of the community’s residents and their pets reflect positively on these officers and the Wenham Police Department,” Chief DiNapoli told the Select Board, noting that almost all of the Wenham Police Department, along with family members, had packed the meeting room in support of their colleagues.
