DRACUT — The Dracut Fire Department is inviting the community to join a 25th anniversary remembrance of the Sept. 11 Terrorist Attacks. The ceremony will be held at Dracut’s memorial featuring a piece of World Trade Center steel.
The annual ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m. — the exact time that Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center. It is expected to last 30 to 45 minutes and will include a wreath-laying and tolling of the fire station’s bell.
American Airlines Pilot John Ogonowski, who grew up on a farm across the street from the Jones Avenue Fire Station that is now home to the World Trade Center steel, was in the cockpit of Flight 11.
His loss and the way the community came together afterward will be remembered, as will the sacrifices first responders made on that fateful day, and in the weeks and months that followed.
The remembrance is an annual tradition of the Dracut Fire Department, but this year on the 25th anniversary of the attacks, the department is encouraging all community members to attend.
The event will be held at Fire Station 2, 15 Jones Ave., near the intersection of Jones Avenue and Broadway. Some members of the Ogonowski family have expressed that they will attend.
“The September 11 Terrorist Attacks had a profound impact on the Town of Dracut, and we would love to have the community join us as we remember John Ogonowski, his family, and all those lost on that day,” said Chief Michael Cunha. “We will also remember the firefighters, police officers, and others who sacrificed themselves for others both on that day and in the weeks and months afterward.”
