GROTON — Fire Chief Arthur Cheeks and Police Chief Michael Luth report that the Groton Fire and Police Departments responded to a crash on Gay Road on Wednesday afternoon that left multiple people with injuries.
At approximately 12:21 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Groton Fire and Police Departments responded to reports of a crash in the area of 67 Gay Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed an electric vehicle on fire. All four occupants had exited the vehicle prior to firefighters’ arrival.
Due to the nature of the fire, firefighters conducted extensive suppression operations. Crews remained on scene to monitor the vehicle and ensure the fire did not rekindle.
Two individuals were transported via medical helicopter, one to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center after being transported to Lowell General Hospital by Westford Fire before being taken by helicopter, and the other was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center. A third individual was transported by the Townsend Fire Department to UMass Memorial Medical Center; the fourth individual was transported by the Littleton Fire Department to Emerson Hospital.
The Pepperell Fire Department, Westford Fire Department, Littleton Fire Department and Townsend Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene. Massachusetts State HazMat was on scene to monitor the area’s air quality. Ayer Fire also provided ALS support and station coverage.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Groton Police.
