BOURNE — Bourne Intermediate School Principal Jane Norton and art teacher Jillian Donovan would like to congratulate fourth grader Kolton Silva on receiving Artsonia’s Artist of the Week award.
Silva won the award the week of Feb. 5, after submitting a drawing to the Artsonia voting competition. Silva won artist of the week for grades 4-6 with 661 votes for his artwork, titled “Crystals.”
“I was 100% happy and excited because I won, and I was so proud that I was the winner,” Silva said.
Donovan, who has taught art for the last 17 years, submitted the entry on behalf of Kolton. She was proud to see one of her students being acknowledged for their creativity and work.
“It’s wonderful to have students recognized for their art, and I think it makes an impact on how they feel about themselves and their accomplishments when someone notices their work,” Donovan said. “One of the best parts of being a teacher is seeing your students become inspired and excited about creating and learning.”
Artsonia is the world’s largest collection of student art, published by teachers and students from around the world. Parents and family can view the art online, leave comments and order keepsakes featuring the artwork.
Artsonia developed the Artist of the Week award 15 years ago as a way to encourage teachers to submit student artwork and engage the school and community to vote on and recognize students for their creative achievements. Every week, Artsonia selects 12 random submissions in each of four different age groups (Pre K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12) from artwork submitted the previous week. Voting is open to the public for several days before the winner is announced.
Blick Art Materials donates a $100 gift certificate to the winning school and a $50 gift certificate to the student artist. Kolton also received a plaque with an image of his artwork and his name to commemorate the achievement.
