The City of Newburyport, Pentucket Regional School District, and Triton Regional School District share that Newburyport City Hall will play host to a unique high school wrestling match later this month.

“The River Rivals Great Debate” will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall Auditorium. The matchup continues the long-standing Cape Ann League rivalry between Pentucket, a co-op team with Newburyport High School, and Triton.

Nock Middle School is the home of River Rival Youth Wrestling, which includes students from Georgetown, Pentucket, Triton, and Newburyport.

Triton Coach Shawn McElligott sees the meet as a way to raise interest in amateur wrestling locally. Both Wakefield Town Hall and Melrose City Hall have hosted wrestling events for several years. “The coaches have told me how great the event is and how much people look forward to it,” McElligott said.

McElligott approached Pentucket Coach Dr. Steve Beaudoin with the idea, then Mayor Sean Reardon, whose administration assisted in arranging the date.

Tickets for “The River Rivals Great Debate” are limited, and may be obtained by contacting Shawn McElligott at Shawn.McElligott@tritonschools.org or Steve Beaudoin at sbeaudoin@mgb.org.

Paid parking will be available in the Green Street lot and in the Parking Garage on Titcomb Street. For further information, please contact Christine Jackson, Executive Assistant to Mayor Reardon, at cjackson@cityofnewburyport.com and at 978-465-4413.
