ROCKPORT — The Rockport Police and Fire Departments responded to a structure fire Sunday morning at a mixed-use building on Broadway.
The departments responded after receiving a call at about 9:58 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, for reports of a strong gas odor throughout the building at 19 Broadway Ave.
Upon their arrival, thick black smoke was visible emanating from the building, and an active fire was confirmed. Crews struck four alarms to bring additional manpower and mutual aid to the scene.
Crews performed an aggressive attack on the fire and knocked it down at approximately 1 p.m.
There were no reported injuries.
At least two families have been displaced, as well as commercial businesses.
Mutual aid was provided by Gloucester, Manchester, Essex, Wenham, Hamilton, Middleton, Ipswich, Peabody, Danvers and Lynn Fire Departments, as well as Rehab 5.
National Grid responded to shut off electrical service to the building.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Rockport Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
