MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson, Principal Michael Devoll and Athletic Director Christopher Carrig are pleased to share that Old Rochester Regional High School’s boys basketball coach, Steve Carvalho, was recognized as the Division 3 Coach of the Year by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA).

Carvalho started at ORRHS in 1995 as the assistant freshman coach and coached 11 sub-varsity seasons for the Bulldogs — three freshman seasons and eight junior varsity seasons. He was hired as varsity head coach for the 2005-2006 winter season and is entering his 19th season in the role.

“Coach Carvalho is as accomplished as a basketball coach as anyone could hope to have on their sideline,” Athletic Director Carrig said. “He is dedicated entirely to the development of his student-athletes as both players and members of the community. His intensity and work ethic are second to none and create a mindset that his teams embrace, which is the key to success for our Bulldogs on and off the court.”

In his time as head coach, Carvalho has an overall record of 216-169. He joined the 200-win group in the MBCA’s Victory Club this past January.

The team has qualified for postseason play 13 of Coach Carvalho’s 18 years. ORR has won the South Coast Conference title six times and — in the old tournament format — was a South Sectional semifinalist three times, winning the South Section in 2015. That same season, the team went on to win a state championship 61-47 over Hoosac Valley High School.

Since the adoption of the current statewide tournament format three years ago, Coach Carvalho and the boys basketball team have made it to the Division 3 Elite 8 (2022) and Final 4 (2023).

“Coach Carvalho is one of the most well-respected coaches in the state and is very deserving of this honor,” Principal Devoll said. “The success of last year’s team represents another example of his commitment to excellence. We are very fortunate to have him leading our basketball program.”

This year’s season — Carvalho’s 19th as head coach — kicks off today, Dec. 5.

“Coach Carvalho’s leadership and passion for the sport has helped our basketball team achieve great success over the past 18 seasons and instilled a sense of pride and unity in our school community,” Superintendent Nelson said. “He is well deserving of this award and we wish him and the team the best of luck as they begin the 2023-2024 season.”
