Town of Wayland to Hold First Community Multicultural Festival

Town Manager Michael McCall is pleased to announce that the Town of Wayland will hold its first Community Multicultural Festival later this month.

WAYLAND – Town Manager Michael McCall is pleased to announce that the Town of Wayland will hold its first Community Multicultural Festival later this month.

Wayland’s Community Multicultural Festival will be held on Sunday, May 21, from 1-5 p.m. at the Wayland High School field house, 264 Old Connecticut Path. The event will offer fun for the whole family, including music, arts and crafts, activities, and food from around the world.

The Boston Beijing Opera Association (BBOA), a non-profit organization established by Boston local Beijing opera enthusiasts, will perform. BBOA will present Beijing opera, the dominant form of Chinese opera, combining music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics.

Lincoln Public Schools’ Step Team, a diverse group of students who are committed to standing together against all forms of discrimination, also will perform. Step is an art form that involves making acapella-style beats with your body to create an experience that can bring together dance, music, and community, and was made popular through African American fraternities and sororities in the United States.

The festival also will feature performances of original Jewish and nature-inspired spiritual folk music by married couple Louis Polisson and Gabriella Feingold. Rabbi Polisson serves as the spiritual leader of Congregation Or Atid, a small, warm, and progressive traditional egalitarian synagogue in Wayland, affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Feingold is a body liberation activist and educator with a background in applied theatre for social change. Feingold is studying toward a master’s degree in social work at Salem State University and working as an intern at Burlington Youth & Family Services. They will perform their mix of original and traditional Jewish music at 4:30 p.m.

Other performances will include musician Tony Curtis, who will perform and tell attendees about his local indigenous heritage, and hip-hop artist Reason Being who will share some of his experience with wrongful incarceration.

“Wayland’s first Community Multicultural Festival will serve as an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate cultures from all over the world,” said Town Manager McCall. “Thank you to all of our sponsors for their generosity and support for the event. We hope to see many members of the community attend.”
