WHITMAN – Superintendent Jeffrey Szymaniak and Whitman-Hanson Regional High School art instructor Christina Maher are pleased to announce that numerous art students represented Whitman-Hanson at the Scholastic Art Awards.

Whitman Hanson senior Eryka Ingram and juniors Jax Loose and Jasmine Harding each had work represented at the 2023 Scholastic Art Awards. Each piece was submitted by students on their own accord and featured strong imagery with personal meaning.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running recognition program for creative teens. Students in grades 7-12 (ages 13 and up) can apply in 28 categories of art and writing. All entries are considered for Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention, as well as other recognitions.

The Massachusetts region of the program is sponsored by the Boston Globe and run by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

Ingram received an honorable mention for her work, a piece titled “Street lights” which depicts a young woman leaning out a car window at nighttime. She will receive a certificate of recognition for her work.

Ingram also submitted a portfolio of her photography for consideration as well.

Ingram is heavily involved in the art department. She has been a member of the Executive Board of the Art in Action Club since she was a freshman. She has also participated in the Memory Project each year, creating portraits of orphans and refugees, and has participated in several exhibitions including receiving previous awards in Scholastic Art Competitions.

“We’re extremely proud of Eryka, Jax and Jasmine’s initiative to submit their own work to this highly competitive art award,” said Maher. “Their pieces each have deep, personal meanings which can be seen and felt through their work. I’m extremely pleased to see their hard work displayed. and look forward to other pieces they’ll create.”
