GLOUCESTER — Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken and Public Health Director Karin Carroll report that increased testing for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been conducted this week for members of the city’s most at-risk populations.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that those who may be at higher risk for serious complications from COVID-19 include those who are 65-years-old and older, live in a nursing home or long-term care facility and those of all ages with underlying medical conditions. The CDC reports that the homeless population may also be at risk for infection from the coronavirus.
This week, testing was performed in the City through the state’s Mobile Testing Program for nursing homes, assisted living facilities and rest homes, as well as at another congregate living facility.
“We’re thankful that some of our most vulnerable residents have been able to gain access to testing for COVID-19, and our Public Health Department alongside our Emergency Management Team are working tirelessly to continue to monitor this situation and provide the support our community needs as we address this pandemic,” Mayor Romeo Theken said.
The City’s Health Department has been in close contact with area facilities working with potentially at-risk populations to ensure they have the access to necessary resources and guidance, as well as to review protocols and plans for isolation and quarantining as needed.
“Testing is a crucial step in understanding the nature of this virus and the way it has impacted our community, and as testing becomes more available we expect the number of confirmed cases in our community to rise,” Carroll said. “In the meantime, we’re urging residents to wear masks when appropriate, practice social distancing, continue washing your hands and contact your healthcare provider by phone or online if you believe you are experiencing symptoms.”
