NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to announce that the Kearsarge Regional High School Math Team placed third at the 2020 NH State Math Contest, held at Plymouth State University on Tuesday.
The team’s 10 most active mathletes were selected to attend the meet. They competed against eleven other schools in the medium division, one of four groups determined by school size.
Each school was first broken into two teams and asked to solve three math problems and answer a multi-part essay question in 35 minutes.
Students then competed individually in three other categories chosen from Recreational Math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Advanced Math. Six Kearsarge students participated in each category.
Three Kearsarge students achieved perfect scores at the meet:
- Steven Durling from New London, grade 12, Advanced Math
- Devin Phyllides from Sutton, grade 10, Algebra 1
- Amber Houle from Springfield, grade 9, Algebra 1
The team meets weekly to prepare for their four Twin State Math League (NH and VT) competitions, and began preparing for the state meet about a month prior with problems from previous years.
Both the freshman/sophomore and junior/senior grade teams of Kearsarge’s Math Team are currently ranked third in the Twin State Math League. The team also has six members currently ranked in the top 10 individually in their division.
