Whitman Police and Fire Departments Respond to School Bus Crash

Four Students Hospitalized With Injuries That Are Not Believed to be Serious

WHITMAN — Police Chief Scott D. Benton and Fire Chief Timothy J. Grenno report that four children suffered injuries that are not believed to be serious after their school bus was rear-ended this morning.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., Whitman police and firefighters responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Auburn Street (Route 14) and Beaver Street.

Upon arrival officers observed that a vehicle struck a Whitman-Hanson school bus from behind.

The bus had stopped to pick up a student and had its lights and stop sign activated. A preliminary investigation revealed that, because of the snowy road conditions, the driver was unable to stop and collided with the bus.

The bus had 38 students on board and was headed to the Conley Elementary School.

Four children complained of pain from the crash after bumping their heads on the seats in front of them. Two Whitman Fire ambulances took them to an area hospital for evaluation. Their injuries were not believed to be serious. The driver of the vehicle that hit the bus was not hurt.

The Whitman-Hanson Public School District was handling notification of parents.

After further investigation, it was determined that the bus sustained minor damage and was able to leave the scene and continue on its route.

Whitman-Hanson schools were operating on a regular schedule Tuesday morning.
