Photo: Gloucester Firefighters Participate in Successful Fight for Air Climb

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that members of the Gloucester Fire Department participated in the annual American Lung Association’s (ALA) Fight for Air Climb this weekend.

Held in prominent skyscrapers and buildings across the country, the climb is one of the ALA’s signature fundraising events that raises money for those affected by lung disease. This year, firefighters arrived at One Boston Place on Saturday, Feb. 4 to ascend the building, which is 601 feet tall and has 41 floors, with two flights of stairs on each floor. In total, the firefighters climbed up 789 steps.

The Gloucester Fire Department has participated in the ALA Fight for Air Climb for the past six years. Firefighters Charlie Scola, Jak Letien, Jon Sanger, Chad Mota, Ryan Goodwin, Jack Brancaleone and Andrew Pierce, as well as Lt. Jim Burke and Lt. Nicolas Ouellette, surpassed the department’s goal of $2,000, raising a total of $2,189.

“Lung disease affects millions of Americans annually, and we’re proud to support the ALA year after year through the air climb event,” Chief Smith said. “I commend the Gloucester firefighters who participated in this challenge and worked together to exceed their fundraising goal.”

The Fight for Air Climb has been in existence for more than 10 years and has raised over $40 million to support the mission of the ALA.
