Burlington Police Department Announces Promotions
BURLINGTON — Police Chief Michael R. Kent is pleased to announce the following promotions:
- Sergeant Michael McDade to Lieutenant
- Detective Matthew H. Leary to Sergeant
McDade has been a Burlington Police Officer since 1993. He currently oversees the BPD Firearm Licensing Unit. In his 21-year career, he has worked patrol, handled traffic court proceedings, and helped manage the BPD Mountain Bike unit. He was previously the Project Leader for the BPD Uniform Review Committee, which proposed new standards and improvements to department uniforms. He has been a sergeant since 2002 and most recently worked as the department’s Community Service Supervisor. He has a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College and is a 2010 graduate of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS).
Lieuteuant McDade was born and raised in Burlington, where he lives with his wife, Ann-Margret. His parents are William and Patricia McDade.

Leary has been a Burlington Police Officer since 2003. He is the department’s firearms instructor and a member of the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Regional Response Team. He has been a detective since 2007 and is a Certified Sexual Assault Investigator and Certified Background Investigator. He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from The University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Sergeant Leary lives in Medford with his with Molly and his two children. He was born and raised in Burlington and is the son of David and Noreen Leary.
