Randolph’s Turner Free Library Unveils ‘Turner’s Titans’ Mural

RANDOLPH — Randolph Town Manager Brian Howard and Turner Free Library Director Elizabeth LaRosee are pleased to announce the unveiling of the new “Turner’s Titans” mural in the teen room at the library.

The mural was facilitated by Teen Librarian Melissa Bennett and painted by local artists Jamaal Eversley and Matt Almeida, with the help of a group of Randolph teens. The mural depicts teenagers as imaginary superheroes.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Turner Free Library unveiled the mural in a ceremony with LaRosee and Town Manager Howard thanking the teens and artists for their hard work.

“This beautiful mural highlights the type of teens that Randolph has in our community and it will serve as a reminder to them and others that they can be their own hero,” LaRosee said.

The library was able to fund the project with the help of a grant from the Library Initiative for Teens and Tweens. The project began in August and the process of painting the mural was done over the span of a week in late October. Bennett believed that the library needed a representation of its teen patrons and looked to Almeida and Eversley for help.

“The teens who visit and use the library are just as important to us as any other patron we may see come through our doors,” said Bennett. “We wanted to ensure that they felt appreciated in our community. We hope that when they see this mural they will have a lasting memory of what teamwork and empowerment can create.”

Almeida and Eversley designed the mural with the use of pictures and art submitted by the teens. The mural was then created on an 8×4 sheet of plywood and has the ability to be moved easily.

Over 30 teens assisted both Almeida and Eversley with the painting of the mural and another group of teens hung the mural up at the unveiling ceremony. Cliff Campbell, a member of the Friends of the Turner Free Library assisted the teens in learning to use power tools, ladders and proper measuring techniques while mounting the mural.

The mural is currently displayed at the library in Teen Room Video Gaming Lounge which is also referred to as “The Dungeon.”

“Some years down the road from now, these teens will be adults and will be able to tell their families that the mural in the library is something that they helped work on,” Town Manager Howard said. “I want to commend them for how beautifully the mural came out and it was great to see this true community project come to life.”
