Newbury Fire Department Responds to Multiple Service Calls Within an Hour

NEWBURY — Chief David Evans reports that the Newbury Fire Department responded to two service calls within an hour on Saturday.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, at approximately 10:58 a.m., the Newbury Fire Department responded to the scene of a bicycle crash at the corner of Coleman Road and Elm Street.

Upon arrival, crews found a bicyclist, who was participating in a bike race passing through town, had struck the guard rail and was tossed from their bike and into the woods. Due to the nature of the bicyclist’s injuries, crews requested MedFlight transport.

The bicyclist was transported to Anna Jaques Hospital from a landing zone at Manter Field on Central Street. 

Elm Street was temporarily closed while crews extracted the bicyclist from the woods.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., Newbury Fire Department responded to a call to assist Massachusetts State Police with a medical emergency on Interstate 95 northbound at exit 81.

Newbury Fire requested Georgetown and Atlantic Ambulances to assist with the call from State Police while they responded to the Elm Street call.

Georgetown Ambulance transported the patient to Anna Jaques Hospital.

While the Elm Street bicyclist was in transport, an engine and ambulance from Newbury Fire were diverted to I-95 to assist Georgetown Ambulance. 

Newbury Police Department assisted with traffic management and accident investigation at Elm Street.

Rowley Fire Department provided assistance establishing the MedFlight landing zone.
