NAHANT — Fire Chief Austin Antrim and Police Chief Timothy Furlong report that the Nahant Fire and Police Departments responded Saturday afternoon to a water rescue off East Point.
On Saturday, Sept. 5, at about 1:04 p.m., Nahant Fire and Police responded to a report of two boaters in distress in the water off East Point.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a boat lost power just off East Point. Another vessel stopped to assist the boat when a wave knocked two people into the water.
One of the boaters was able to get back aboard a vessel. The second boater was provided a life preserver and began swimming toward the rocks before becoming unresponsive in the water.
Nahant Fire responded to the area with its rescue boat and pulled him from the water. Firefighters immediately began providing lifesaving care.
The victim was brought by the rescue boat to the Town Wharf to an awaiting ambulance, then transported by Atlantic Ambulance to Salem Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
The Swampscott Fire Department, Swampscott Harbormaster and Lynn Fire Department also provided mutual aid.
The incident remains under investigation.
