CONCORD — On crisp fall mornings across Concord, sidewalks and bike paths were filled with laughter and helmeted riders as students, families and staff took part in the district’s annual Walk, Bike and Roll to School Days.

Through the district’s participation in the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School program, the annual events encourage students to start their mornings with fresh air and exercise while learning about pedestrian and bicycle safety.

Each of the three elementary schools — Alcott Elementary School, Thoreau Elementary School and Willard Elementary School — and the Ellen Garrison Building at Concord Middle School hosted its own celebration. Concord-Carlisle High School will host a similar event in the spring.

At each event, students and families gathered at designated meeting points and made the final stretch to school on foot, by bike, or on scooters.

Participation was strong across the district, supported by school staff, families, volunteers and the Concord Police Department. Schools used the fall events to reinforce safety habits and celebrate the active ways students travel each day.

District leaders also made sure that the events were accessible and inclusive, with planning efforts aimed at supporting all students, including those in the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) program. Every student who wanted to join in the celebration was able to, thanks to the support of staff and families.

“Our annual Walk, Bike and Roll to School Days allow our students to start their days feeling connected and supported,” said Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter. “We’re grateful for our partnership with Safe Routes to School, and thankful to our staff, the Concord Police Department and families who made these events possible.”
