ATTLEBORO — Chief Scott LaChance reports the Attleboro Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to a structure fire that left two people injured and displaced residents of a two-family home.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, at approximately 1:49 p.m., Attleboro firefighters were dispatched to 57 East St. for report of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from the first-floor residence. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and quickly knocked down the flames.
The fire was contained to the first-floor living room. However, smoke damage was present throughout the building.
A male resident of the first-floor apartment suffered burns to his head and face along with smoke inhalation. He was transported by advanced life support ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital.
A female good Samaritan who assisted the resident in exiting the home was also injured. She was transported by advanced life support ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.
The American Red Cross responded to provide temporary housing assistance for the residents. Fire crews remained on scene until approximately 3:20 p.m.
“The quick actions of our firefighters prevented this fire from spreading beyond the living room and causing more extensive damage,” District Chief Mark Renker said. “We also want to recognize the efforts of a neighbor who tried to help, and wish both individuals a full recovery.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Fire Departments of Seekonk, Norton and North Attleboro provided station coverage during the incident.
