MERRIMAC — Merrimac Police Chief Eric Shears and Amesbury Police Chief Craig Bailey report that the Merrimac Police Department, with assistance from Amesbury Police, arrested a Brockton man on several charges following multiple motor vehicle crashes.
GEORGE GOODWIN, AGE 30, of BROCKTON, was arrested and charged with the following:
- Wanton Destruction of Property (Two Counts)
- Leaving the Scene of Property Damage (Two Counts)
- Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Operation of a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
On Wednesday, May 14, at approximately 2:52 a.m., Merrimac Police were dispatched to a business at 12 Merrimac Square for reports of a motor vehicle that crashed into the building.
Upon arrival, officers observed damage to the outside of the building, however the car appeared to have fled the scene. A preliminary investigation determined that a gray Nissan, which was operating at a high rate of speed, was involved in the crash.
At approximately 4:03 a.m., Amesbury Police advised Merrimac Police that they had a motor vehicle crash on Pond Hill Road. It was determined that the same gray Nissan was involved in this incident.
Merrimac Police subsequently received two additional reports of suspected property damage consistent with a crash on East Main Street and at the corner of Central Street and School Street.
At 7:27 a.m., Amesbury Police received a report of a breaking and entering involving a suspect in a home on Middle Road.
The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT team was called to assist and was able to remove the suspect from the home. The suspect was identified as GOODWIN.
GOODWIN was placed under arrest without incident.
GOODWIN was arraigned in Newburyport District Court on Wednesday. Bail was set at $10,000 and Goodwin was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental health evaluation. The case was continued to June 17, 2025 for a pretrial hearing. Bail also was revoked on a pending case in Lynn District Court, in which GOODWIN is charged with Breaking and Entering a Vehicle/Boat at Night with the Intent to Commit a Felony; Receiving Stolen Property; and Receiving a Stolen Credit Card.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
