EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Michael Jenkins and the Albert Saccocia Memorial Committee wish to invite residents and members of the law enforcement community to a memorial dedication ceremony for the late Patrolman Albert Saccocia on the East Bridgewater Town Common at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 17.
Patrolman Saccocia gave his life in the line of duty on Sept. 30, 1966, while responding to a disturbance involving about two dozen patrons at the former Casa Loma Lounge on Route 106. During the incident, while trying to break up the altercation, Saccocia was hit multiple times with a club. Saccocia staggered out to the parking lot, where he suffered a fatal heart attack, leaving behind a wife and three school-aged children.
Though he is recognized on both the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial in Boston, no local memorial exists in his name — until now. After 58 years, the Albert Saccocia Memorial Fund will honor Patrolman Saccocia’s sacrifice with a permanent memorial in front of East Bridgewater Town Hall, overlooking the police station.
At the dedication ceremony on May 17, the Albert Saccocia Memorial Committee is hoping for participation from color guards and representatives from police departments across Massachusetts. To accommodate attendees, a section of road in front of the Town Common and the entire Town Hall parking lot will be reserved for police vehicles.
After the ceremony, all guests are invited to a community reception at the East Bridgewater Commercial Club, 1 Neilson Ave.
The Albert Saccocia Memorial Committee includes retired Veterans Agent Thomas Benvie, American Legion Post 91 Commander Paul Connell, retired East Bridgewater Police Sgt. Larry Davidson and East Bridgewater Commercial Club Vice President Myles Heger.
The Albert Saccocia Memorial Committee is also raising funds to support the construction and maintenance of the memorial. Contributions from local residents, businesses and police departments are welcome.
Donations can be made via:

“This memorial is long overdue,” said Chief Jenkins. “We are extremely grateful to the Albert Saccocia Memorial Committee for giving Patrolman Saccocia the recognition he deserves, right here in the community he served, and for the community and town’s support of this project.”
For planning purposes, dedication ceremony attendees are asked to RSVP to Thomas Benvie at tbenvie@comcast.net.
