Avon Fire Department Knocks Down Back-to-Back Fires

AVON — Chief David Charest reports that the Avon Fire Department responded to back-to-back fires Monday evening, including a fire at a recycling center and a house fire.

On Monday, July 27 at approximately 4:25 p.m., the Avon Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Waste Management recycling facility at 40 Ledin Drive.

The department arrived to find a fire in the main hopper. Crews contained the fire to that area, and extinguished the fire in approximately two hours. There were no reported injuries and the recycling plant is expected to resume full operation with limited disruption.

Then, at approximately 7:28 p.m., the Avon Fire Department was called to an outdoor fire at 65 Malley Ave. Crews arrived to find the fire had extended to the house. They quickly knocked down the fire and conducted an overhaul.

The residents are temporarily displaced and are working with building officials to ensure the home is safe to reoccupy. There were no reported injuries.

“I’d like to thank our on-duty and off-duty firefighters for working hard through the hot weather while knocking down multiple fires yesterday evening,” said Chief Charest. “Their quick response to both calls helped prevent further damage to the buildings. The department also wishes to thank the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center for its assistance with dispatch during the calls.” 

Avon firefighters were assisted at the scene by their mutual aid partners, including Brockton Fire Department and Avon Police Department. 

The cause of the fires remains under investigation by the Avon Fire Department.
