EASTON — Chief Justin Alexander and members of the Easton Fire Department wish to thank the community for supporting the department’s annual Open House.

The event was held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Easton Fire Station 1 on Lothrop Street ahead of National Fire Prevention Week.

“This year’s Open House was an incredible event. We had amazing weather, a tremendous turnout and you could tell the amount of fun everyone had by the smiles on their faces,” Chief Alexander said. “This event would not be possible without an incredible amount of work by our dedicated organizers, the support of our department and so many generous volunteers and sponsors.”

“Fire safety is an important issue that we take seriously, and we welcome every opportunity to educate the community on how to keep everyone safe,” Chief Alexander added.

Well over a thousand people attended Saturday’s three-hour event filled with family friendly activities, live demonstrations and food.

The Open House allowed attendees to explore Easton Fire Department apparatus, including a fire engine, ladder truck and ambulance, Easton Police vehicles, including motorcycles, and a Community Emergency Response Team UTV. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad brought two robots.

Easton firefighters assisted children in using fire hoses to knock down imaginary fires on a wooden cutout. Sparky the Fire Dog was in attendance and took photos with the kids. Children could also participate in face painting, decorating pumpkins and coloring activities.

Easton firefighters provided CPR demonstrations for babies, adults and dogs. Easton Fire had a table for Community Connect, a program that allows residents to provide information to the department ahead of time to help first responders be better prepared in the event of an emergency. The Town’s Care Team, featuring a mental health clinician, was in attendance.

Easton Fire performed a Jaws of Life demonstration, Firefighter Jack Mills climbed to the top of the ladder truck to drop candy and the department conducted a “Close Before You Doze” live burn demonstration showing the importance of closing your bedroom door to prevent the spread of fire. Easton Fire Deputy Chief Jon Carroll and Easton Police Deputy Chief Philip Adams participated in “Dunk the Deputies” dunk tank event. Lt. Jason Healey, representing the Easton Fire Dive Team, was also in the dunk tank.

Additional community organizations and committees included Easton Wings of Hope, First Responder Therapy Dogs, H.U.G.S. II and Raising Multicultural Kids. The Easton Community Emergency Response Team provided resources and cotton candy, Ferrara Construction Corp. sponsored E’s Ice Cream and More and there was Domino’s Pizza. Several raffle prizes were also given to lucky winners.

Chief Alexander would like to thank sponsors who helped make the Open House possible, including Alltown, Bank of Easton, Big Y, Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin’, Roche Bros., Shaw’s and TMK Paving.

Fire Prevention Week, recognized Oct. 6-12 this year, is organized by the National Fire Protection Association with the goal of educating the public about simple but important ways they can keep themselves and those they live with safe. This year’s campaign is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™”
