STONEHAM — Stoneham Public Schools and the Stoneham Police Department have appealed for information following the theft of sports equipment during an alumni event held at the old Stoneham High School on the evening of Tuesday, June 25.
During the event, attended by both alumni and other members of the community, a group of individuals accessed the Athletic Training Room and stole a significant quantity of sports equipment, including football helmets and jerseys, field hockey jerseys, and practice shorts.
The football helmets alone are valued at $400 each, and the thefts affect 10 sports teams competing for the school during the fall.
“All of the rooms that were out-of-bounds were locked, including the Athletic Training Room,” Superintendent Ljungberg said. “However, the Athletic Training Room contains a back door, which was not locked, and the group was able to access it by navigating a number of back classes and rooms.”
The District estimates that 350 to 400 people attended the Alumni Walkthrough at the old Stoneham High School.
The old Stoneham High School, located at 149 Franklin St., was permanently closed on Wednesday, June 12, in place of the new Stoneham High School.
“Our priority is the return of the sports equipment so that all of our teams can train for and compete in the fall,” Superintendent Ljungberg said. “To that end, we are working closely with Stoneham Police, and we urge anyone with information regarding the incident to contact detectives.”
The incident is currently under investigation by the Stoneham Police Department.
Officials ask anyone with information regarding the identity of the people who accessed the Athletic Training Room or the whereabouts of the stolen sports equipment, to contact the Stoneham Police Department on 781-438-1215.
Superintendent Ljungberg will be available to speak with the media outside Stoneham High School, 149 Franklin St., at 5:30 p.m. today.
