MANSFIELD – Superintendent Teresa Murphy and Principal Russ Booth are pleased to announce that Mansfield High School student Rishi Tripathi has been selected for the STEM Enhancement in Earth and Space Science (SEES) summer internship at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Space Research (UT/CSR).
SEES is a collaborative effort of UT/CSR and NASA. Internship programs are organized around an aerospace or space science theme drawn from NASA’s diverse engineering and scientific research programs. The program combines the strengths of collaborators to enrich the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
This nationally competitive program, funded by NASA, selects student participants who will increase their knowledge of STEM through Earth and space education.
This year, over 200 applications were received for the on-site internship position. All participants will work remotely with a dedicated project scientist prior to the in-person internship. They will also complete an Earth and space science course as well as a Python coding course.
On July 8, Tripathi will join 100 students from across the United States at UT/CSR to begin touring facilities, networking with other students, conducting experiments and research and beginning mentorship under NASA experts.
Throughout the two-week program, students will work at UT/CSR, conduct hands-on activities and field investigations, collaborate with NASA-funded scientists and engineers and work on various NASA missions. Students will also work with scientists and engineers to conduct authentic research from data received from NASA’s earth-observing satellites as well as designing Mars habitats, lunar exploration and analysis of images from the International Space Station.
The SEES internship proves that the excitement students feel about space science is a critical step in enriching science, math, engineering and technology. Each year, the internship provides students with the rare and unique opportunity to work with professional scientists and engineers at the cutting edge of space exploration.
“On behalf of the entire district, I would like to recognize and congratulate Rishi Tripathi for his acceptance into the prestigious STEM Enhancement in Earth and Space Science (SEES) summer internship program,” said Superintendent Murphy. “Rishi is an incredibly hard worker who always strives to do his best. We look forward to hearing about his unique experience in this program and seeing what he will do next.”
