WAKEFIELD– Superintendent David DiBarri is proud to share that Northeast Metro Tech has received three awards from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) recognizing the school’s achievements in the State Seal of Biliteracy Program for the 2024-2025 school year.

The awards were presented on Oct. 26 at the Multilingual Education Leaders (MEL) Network Fall Convening by Massachusetts Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Pedro Martinez.

Northeast Metro Tech received the Gold Star Award, which recognizes schools where at least 20% of graduates earn the State Seal of Biliteracy while meeting equity benchmarks.

The school also received the College, Career, and Technical Education (CCTE) Access Commendation for its efforts to expand Seal of Biliteracy opportunities for students enrolled in career and technical education programs. The third award, Inclusive Access Commendation, was presented to Northeast Metro Tech for its accomplishments in providing students with disabilities access to the program.

“Receiving these awards is a tremendous honor and a proud moment for our entire school community,” said Northeast Metro Tech’s State Seal of Biliteracy Coordinator Sandra Carreno. “What makes this recognition especially meaningful is seeing our students’ language skills and cultural backgrounds celebrated as valuable strengths. The Seal of Biliteracy gives students an opportunity to take pride in their multilingual abilities while opening doors to future educational and career opportunities. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and, most importantly, of the opportunities we continue to create for our students.”

The State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who demonstrate proficiency in English and one or more additional languages. The program celebrates linguistics while helping students showcase valuable skills that can benefit them in higher education or a future career.

These honors reflect the collaborative efforts of Northeast Metro Tech’s administration, curriculum coordinator, teachers, counselors, staff and students, whose work has made the program a success at the state level.

“These awards reflect our commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed and demonstrate their abilities, said Superintendent DiBarri. “We are proud of the work our students and staff have done to celebrate multilingualism, promote equity and make the Seal of Biliteracy Program accessible to every student in the Northeast Metro Tech community.”
