Billerica Police Department K-9 KC Hit by Vehicle While Assisting in Missing Person Search

BILLERICA — Chief Roy Frost reports that Billerica Police K-9 KC was struck by a vehicle while assisting in a missing person search in Lowell.

On Thursday, Oct. 8, K-9 KC and Officer John Duggan were assisting Lowell Police with a missing person report when KC was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Monadnock Avenue and Staples Street.

Officer Duggan transported KC to MassVet in Woburn for evaluation of her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with Lowell Police, who investigated the crash.

K-9 KC received a thorough evaluation, treatment for her injuries and plenty of support from Billerica Police officers. She is expected to make a full recovery.

KC, a 1½-year-old black Labrador retriever, joined the Billerica Police Department in 2025 and is certified in tracking. She graduated from the Connecticut State Police K-9 program in July 2026. KC is named after fallen Billerica Police Officer Kenneth Collins, who died in the line of duty on Oct. 7, 1969.

“The K-9s in our department are not only a valuable asset to our investigations and to our neighboring departments, but they are also part of the Billerica Police Department family. I am glad KC did not suffer more serious injuries and that she can recover at home with Officer Duggan,” said Chief Frost.
