NORTHBOROUGH & SOUTHBOROUGH — Student-athletes, families and staff gathered for a day of competition and inclusion during the district’s fourth annual Titan Games.

On Friday, Oct. 2, the Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough held the Titan Games, a sporting event modeled after Special Olympics track and field competitions.

This year, over 100 student-athletes from the district’s 10 schools participated in several competitions at Algonquin Regional High School, including long jump, throwing and running events.

Frank Nellenback, district adapted physical education teacher, helped to organize the day.

“The Titan Games is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Nellenback. “It is truly a special day of competition, and I am always inspired to see our athletes showing off their skills in the different running, throwing and jumping events. I’d like to thank all of the student volunteers and staff members who helped our athletes thrive during the Games.”

The day began with an opening ceremony, where participants paraded around the track with a Titan Games banner and game torch. The national anthem was performed and the Special Olympics athlete oath was recited to kick off the games.

With assistance from middle school student volunteers and the district’s physical therapists, occupational therapists and other student support staff, athletes rotated through a series of competitive events throughout the day.

Each athlete received a medal to recognize their efforts, and a closing ceremony was held to celebrate their achievements. Athletes enjoyed a dance party on the track and an outdoor picnic to conclude the Titan Games.

“We are always proud to watch athletes, staff and student volunteers from across the district join together for the Titan Games,” said Superintendent Gregory L. Martineau. “It was inspiring to see participants from all 10 schools gather and uplift each other throughout the day. Each year, we look forward to recognizing our athletes and seeing the school community support them.”
