CANTON — Chief Jamie Meier reports that the Canton Fire Department battled a two-alarm fire that left one person hurt and caused the death of a dog at a Hickory Lane home Sunday afternoon. A second fire broke out at the same location early Monday morning.
On Sunday, Oct. 4, at approximately 3:45 p.m., the department responded to a report of a house fire at 11 Hickory Lane.
Upon arrival, crews observed heavy flames coming from a closed porch at the rear of the two-story home that had extended to the roof and attic.
Firefighters assisted the sole occupant, who was found injured outside of the home at the scene. Firefighters initially attempted an interior attack but transitioned to a defensive exterior approach after the roof of the home began to sag and partially collapse.
While battling the fire, firefighters faced water supply issues due to a nearby fire hydrant not functioning properly.
The occupant of the home was transported to a Boston hospital with non-life threatening burn injuries.
A pet labradoodle was found deceased inside the home.
The home was declared a total loss. The two residents of the home were able to find temporary housing arrangements with family.
During the initial fire response, the Stoughton, Randolph, Norwood, Westwood, Sharon and Milton Fire Departments provided mutual aid on scene, and the Dedham Engine Company provided station coverage.
While the homeowner was boarding up the home early Monday morning, another fire broke out at the same location. Firefighters then launched an exterior attack to knock down the fire.
One firefighter was transported to Milton Hospital as a precaution.
During the second fire, the Stoughton, Sharon, Milton, Norwood and Westwood Fire Departments provided mutual aid assistance, while an engine from Dedham Fire Department provided station coverage.
A camper vehicle with a fiberglass shell containing propane tanks stationed on the rear of the property ignited during the second fire, melting the vinyl siding of a neighboring home.
The cause of both fires remains under investigation by the Canton Fire Department, but investigators do not believe it to be suspicious at this time.
The State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office responded to the scene and will be assisting the Canton Fire Department with the investigation.
“The fire was well developed prior to our arrival,” said Chief Meier. “We went into a defensive position early on due to the partial collapse of the roof into the attic space. I’d like to commend all of our firefighters who battled this very difficult fire, which unfortunately caused considerable damage, an injury to the occupant and the tragic death of a pet dog inside the home. I’d also like to thank our Mutual Aid partners who provided support at the scene, along with station coverage. Our thoughts are with the resident as they recover from their injuries and begin the difficult process of moving forward.”
