CONCORD — Concord Public Schools is exploring plans to replace Alcott Elementary School’s aging playground with new equipment, an accessible surface and level pathways that would allow more children to use the play area.

The program remains in the early planning stages. The District is gathering student input, considering design options and exploring funding for a project initially estimated to cost $650,000 to $690,000.

The current playground, built in the early 2000s, spans approximately 10,000 square feet. Several features need repair, and the site has experienced drainage problems.

The playground also presents barriers for children with mobility disabilities. Its wood-chip surface and lack of level pathways make it difficult for some children to reach and use the equipment.

A potential replacement could include a flat, rubberized surface and level pathways so that those with physical limitations can access the site and reach the playground features. Initial design discussions have included both traditional playground equipment and “naturescape” themes.

Student surveys have shown interest in equipment that allows children to move, climb, spin and slide.

“We want to maximize the amount of play that we can get out of our future playground,” Principal Naomi Krakow said. “What design will get us the most bang for our buck while ensuring everything we do is more accessible than what we have right now, which is minimally accessible? We want elements that allow for movement and safe play while also allowing kids to push themselves out of their comfort zone.”

Alcott Elementary School has applied for up to $500,000 in funding through the Concord Community Preservation Committee (CPC). Funding has not yet been secured, and the District is exploring whether private fundraising could help cover the remaining cost.

“We’d like to gain support for this playground replacement project from the community and our local leaders,” Principal Krakow said. “Building a new playground at the site will give our students and children from the community more opportunities to stay active, healthy and happy.”

Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter expressed support for the proposed playground replacement.

“We look forward to a day when we can cut the ribbon on a safer, more accessible and functional playground facility at Alcott,” Dr. Hunter said.
