Newburyport School Resource Officer Kyle McElroy Honored with 40 Under 40 Award

NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Matthew Simons is pleased to share that Officer Kyle McElroy has been named a recipient of the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 40 Under 40 Award.

Officer McElroy was among 40 young professionals recognized on Thursday, Sept. 24, during a ceremony held at the Secret Garden at The Brook in Seabrook, N.H.

The 40 Under 40 Award recognizes individuals who are making a difference through their careers, leadership, civic engagement and commitment to the greater Newburyport community and beyond.

Officer McElroy was raised locally, graduating from Newburyport High School in 2010, where he is being inducted into the Sports Wall of Fame this year. He is a graduate of Salem State University, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice. Before joining the department, he worked as a corrections officer at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.

“I am incredibly honored to be recognized as a 40 Under 40 recipient, especially alongside so many accomplished young professionals from our community,” said Officer McElroy. “Working with the students and staff of Newburyport Public Schools has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I am grateful for the relationships I’ve built over the years and for the opportunity to be part of a community that has supported me since I was a student at Newburyport High School.”

A 10-year veteran of the Newburyport Police Department, he currently serves as a School Resource Officer for all Newburyport schools.

In 2025, Officer McElroy received a Public Service Award from Mayor Sean Reardon, recognizing his dedication and diligent work in Newburyport Schools.

The yearbook of the Newburyport High School Class of 2024 was dedicated to SRO McElroy as a testament to his commitment to the school community. Students said he always made everyone smile, made school a positive and welcoming space, and advocated for the safety of the students.

“Officer McElroy exemplifies what it means to be a community police officer,” said  Marshal Simons. “His commitment to the students, families and staff of Newburyport Public Schools goes far beyond his responsibilities as a School Resource Officer. We are proud to see Kyle recognized among the region’s outstanding young professionals, and this honor is well deserved.”
