Attleboro Firefighters Stop Garage Fire From Spreading to Home

ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Department extinguished a well-involved garage fire Tuesday morning, preventing the fire from spreading into the attached residence.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, just before 10 a.m., the Attleboro Fire Department received multiple calls reporting a structure fire on Burt Street.

First-arriving crews found an attached garage fully involved in fire, along with a vehicle fire. The fire had consumed the garage and was extending toward the attached home. Firefighters also encountered live electrical wires sparking across the driveway, creating an additional hazard.

Firefighters immediately began an aggressive attack on the garage fire while additional crews entered the residence to search for occupants and check for fire extension.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in approximately 20 minutes. Crews stopped the fire at the garage and prevented it from spreading into the home’s living area, which sustained minimal smoke damage. The fire also damaged three vehicles.

“This fire was already well involved when crews first arrived, and the live electrical wires added another element to an already dangerous situation,” District Chief Michael Maitland said. “Crews were able to stop the fire at the garage and keep the damage to the residence to a minimum. They made a great stop.”

Crews remained on scene after the fire was extinguished to clear smoke from the residence, conduct overhaul operations and check for hidden fire extension.

One Attleboro firefighter was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Two residents suffered minor burn injuries, but refused transport.

National Grid responded to secure the electrical wires and terminate power to the structure. The Attleboro Building Department also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Attleboro Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit.

North Attleboro Fire Department provided mutual aid on scene. The Cumberland, Norton, Mansfield and Plainville Fire Departments provided station coverage. 

Crews cleared the scene at approximately 11:40 a.m.
