METHUEN – Methuen’s Adult Learning Center teacher Tim Jaroche is being recognized for his commitment to professional growth and innovative instruction after being chosen to contribute to the System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) blog.
Jaroche, an adult educator at the Methuen Adult Learning Center, was selected as a special guest contributor for the SABES Mathematics and Adult Numeracy Curriculum and Instruction Professional Development Team. His blog, “Letting Students Take the Lead,” explores how his approach to teaching mathematics has evolved through his classroom experience and professional development with SABES math coaches.
The SABES math team highlighted Jaroche’s contribution as a resource worth sharing with adult education students and staff. The blog describes Jaroche’s journey as he learned to approach mathematics instruction in a way that gives adults a greater role in their own learning.
“Tim’s commitment to learning and growing as an educator is a wonderful reflection of the dedication we see throughout the Methuen Adult Learning Center,” said Supervisor of Adult Education Carolyn McHugh. “He has taken on the challenge of strengthening his instruction because he understands how important it is to meet adult learners where they are and help them build the confidence and skills they need to achieve their goals.”
Jaroche currently teaches Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at the Methuen Adult Learning Center. Over the past two years, he has embraced the challenge of developing his math instruction, participating in the SABES Math Academy and attending additional professional development, including Saturday sessions.
Through SABES coaching and development, Jaroche has continued to advance the strategies designed to empower, engage and excite adult learners.
The Methuen Adult Learning Center serves a diverse community of adult learners through free educational programming funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Methuen Public Schools and the City of Methuen. The center provides Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education and ESOL programming, with classes offered in morning and evening schedules and a combination of in-person, hybrid and remote learning options.
The center serves nearly 200 students annually, many students being parents, grandparents, caregivers, siblings and relatives of children at Methuen Public Schools.
In addition to classroom instruction, Methuen Adult Learning Center students participate in field trips, guest speaker programs and community partnerships that support their educational, career and civic goals. Recent opportunities have included visits to the Massachusetts State House, where students learned about government and civic engagement and met with state legislators, as well as connections with local colleges, career centers and community organizations.
