Cops for Kids with Cancer and Area Police Support Burlington Family

BURLINGTON — Cops for Kids with Cancer (CFKWC) and local law enforcement agencies came together on Wednesday, June 10, to support Maxwell Smith and his family as they were presented with $5,500 to assist in his ongoing battle with cancer.

On Wednesday at 3 p.m., Peabody, Chelmsford, Carlisle, Burlington, Wilmington, Woburn, Billerica and Everett police departments supported the family at the Burlington Town Common, where CFKWC presented the check along with additional gifts of support.

The event highlighted the strength of the Smith family and the collective commitment of local law enforcement to stand beside them during this difficult time.

Maxwell Smith, 2, of Burlington, was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a rare and fast-growing cancer, in July 2025. He is currently undergoing outpatient treatment at Jimmy Fund Clinic/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Maxwell lives with his parents, Meghan and Leigh, and his three sisters.

The escort and presentation aimed to provide both financial assistance and a meaningful show of solidarity for the family.

CFKWC is a nonprofit organization that partners with local law enforcement agencies to provide direct financial assistance to families across New England who have children battling cancer. Unlike many charitable organizations that focus on research, CFKWC funds are given directly to families, who may use them to offset medical expenses or help manage the day-to-day financial challenges that come with prolonged treatment.

Members of participating police departments, along with CFKWC representatives, attended to support the family during the presentation.

“What an incredible little warrior. Today’s outpouring of support for MadMax and the Smith family is a powerful reflection of the values that define Cops for Kids With Cancer and the law enforcement community,” said CFKWC Board Member and Chelmsford Police Department Chief Gary Hannagan. “We are honored to stand beside families facing unimaginable challenges and to demonstrate that they never fight alone. The generosity, compassion, and unity displayed today exemplifies the very best of our mission and our profession.”

“It is an honor, as a member of the Board of Directors for Cops for Kids with Cancer, to present Maxwell and his family with this check,” said Chelmsford Police Traffic Officer Sal Mirabella Jr. “Today, Maxwell became part of a very special group, the CFKWC family, and we are proud to stand by him and his loved ones during this journey.”
