Tewksbury Police Department De-Escalates Situation Involving Individual Experiencing Mental Health Crisis

TEWKSBURY — The Tewksbury Police Department, with assistance from the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT team, responded to an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

Police were dispatched to a home on Salem Road on Wednesday, April 22, for a report of an individual who said they were armed and threatened to harm themselves.

Police secured the area around the home. Officers attempted to convince the individual to leave the home, but they barricaded themselves inside.

The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team responded and assisted in de-escalating. The individual then came outside under their own accord. No injuries were reported.

The individual is being connected with the appropriate mental health resources.

“I am grateful to the professional work of Tewksbury Police and NEMLEC SWAT team for de-escalating the situation. This had a positive outcome, in which nobody was injured and the individual can receive the support that they need,” said Chief Ryan Columbus. “I am proud of the response from our officers, who relied on their extensive training to act professionally in a high-pressure situation, and the NEMLEC SWAT Team, which is a great resource to have in moments such as these.”
