MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson and Director of Food and Nutrition Services Jill Henesey would like to recognize school nutrition professionals today in honor of National School Lunch Hero Day.
School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for families, students, school staff and communities to thank the school nutrition professionals who serve nutritious meals to over 500,000 students across the Commonwealth every school day. School nutrition professionals help fuel academic achievement and lead programs and initiatives that support the whole child.
The districts have a team of 21 school nutrition professionals between six schools. This year, they have served over 52,447 breakfast meals and 173,154 lunch meals. The team strives to provide healthy, freshly made meals daily including items such as fruit & yogurt parfaits, smoothies, protein power pack meals, vegetarian offerings, freshly made salads, wraps and deli sandwiches, in addition to the daily menu.
Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented — for many children, school lunch can be the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.
“School nutrition employees are essential to our districts and contribute every day to our students’ health and wellness by providing safe and healthy meals,” Director Henesey said. “We are thankful to these hard working heroes and are pleased to recognize them on School Lunch Hero Day.”
In recognition of their dedication, Director Henesey is sharing sweet treats, a custom-made card, and a signed certificate from Superintendent Nelson with the districts’ school nutrition professionals today.
“We are lucky to have a great team of 21 school nutrition professionals who work every day to serve meals to our students and support their success,” Superintendent Nelson said. “We are grateful for their continued dedication to our students.”
