Hamilton and Wenham Police Will Add Additional Patrols During Junior and Senior Prom Nights

Extra Police On Duty May 9 and 30 for Junior and Senior Proms

Wenham Police Chief Thomas Perkins and Hamilton Police Chief Russell Stevens today announced that their respective police departments will have extra patrols on town streets on May 9 for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School Junior Prom, and May 30 for the Senior Prom, in an effort to ensure safety on the streets on both nights.

“We want our students to have a fun, safe, and successful prom night, and that both starts and ends with a safe car ride,” Chief Perkins said. “On prom night, it is all about making smart decisions that get you, your date, and your friends, to the dance and back home safely.”

Hamilton and Wenham police will have additional, marked cruisers on the roads as Highway Safety Patrols on both nights. Speed, distracted driving, and operating under the influence laws will be enforced.

“Prom night should be all about positive memories with your friends,” Chief Stevens said. “There is no reason to jeopardize your or your friends’ safety. Be smart, and have a fun night. Don’t text or talk on the phone when driving, and do not drink and drive.”

The two police departments remind teen drivers of the following:

• Buckle your seat belt. Safety start there, and many of the safety features in your car are only designed to work when you are properly buckled in.
• Teen drivers are not allowed to use their cell phones — even to make calls — when driving.
• No one is allowed to send or read text messages while driving. Texting while driving is now the single largest killer of teen drivers.
• You drink, you drive, you lose.
