AVON — On Tuesday, the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES) and the Avon Police Department conducted a joint operation to enforce a heavy commercial vehicle exclusion area and increase safe driving behaviors.

During the four-hour operation, police engaged 75 commercial vehicles, conducted 12 federal inspections, removed five drivers and four commercial vehicles from the road for safety-related violations, and issued nearly 60 violations totaling more than $26,000 in fines.

“Law enforcement organizations work most effectively when they cooperate across municipal borders,” said Avon Police Chief Jeffrey J. Bukunt. “This joint operation between Avon Police and the Massachusetts State Police was highly successful and demonstrates the commitment our officers have to working proactively to keep our community and motorists safe.”

“The Massachusetts State Police deeply appreciates the opportunity to partner with our colleagues on the Avon Police Department and enhance community safety,” said Colonel Geoffrey Noble. “While our economy depends on the transportation services of these commercial vehicles, they have a responsibility to operate safely on Massachusetts roadways. I commend the Troopers working on our Truck Team and the Avon Police Officers who contributed to this operation and performed their work with diligence and skill.”

Troopers and Officers addressed several dangerous practices in the course of the operation, including a vehicle weighing 27,000 pounds over its allowance, an unlicensed commercial operator found in possession marijuana, and carriers attempting to move freight in violation of an active out-of-service order or without proper operating authority, liability or insurance.

Anyone with information about improper or dangerous commercial vehicle activity is encouraged to report it — highway activity to State Police and other roads to local police.
