LENOX — Town residents were greeted by an unusual sight on Wednesday: two dozen elementary school students being escorted across town by firefighters and police officers.

The Morris Elementary School students, parents, and teachers were participating in the 2024 Winter Walk & Roll, a flagship event of Safe Routes To School: a federally funded program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The program, whose concept started in the 1990s and spread nationwide in 2005 when Congress approved funding, promotes the benefits of “active transportation,” including exercise, independence, and improved air quality.

“This isn’t just about walking or rolling, it’s also making a statement that our streets are and ought to be safe for everyone, including students,” said Principal Brenda Kelley. “Even in the heart of winter, parents should be able to feel confident about sending their kids to school using active means.”

The event stepped off at about 8 a.m. from Lilac Park. First responders provided support to students along the 20-minute walk to Morris Elementary School, with Police Chief Stephen O’Brien and Fire Chief Chris O’Brien taking command at street crossings.

Assisting were Police Officers William Colvin and Eric Kirby.

Principal Kelley wishes to thank the chiefs, Lenox Police Department, and Lenox Fire Department, for ensuring student safety.
