Old Rochester Regional Unified Bulldogs Squad Downs Tri-Town Police for Ninth Straight Win, Raising Over $3,000

MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson, Principal Michael Devoll, Coach Emma Fenton and the Police Departments and Chiefs in Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester announce that the Old Rochester Regional Unified Bulldogs continued their streak of dominance against the Tri-Town Police squad in a 67-46 classic that also raised over $3,000 in door sales and raffle proceeds to support the district’s unified sports programs.

It was wire-to-wire dominance by Old Rochester’s Unified Squad, as the overmatched police officers watched the Unified Squad improve to 9-0 on the season, in a win that continued a season-long trend that saw every player on the team score baskets to support the effort.

The 2nd Annual Unified Bulldog Fundraiser Basketball Game vs. Tri-Town Police was a riveting success, with students, faculty/staff, police officers and community members coming together in the spirit of community unity to raise money for the district’s unified sports efforts.

“All of our players showed incredible growth and improvement throughout the season,” said Coach Emma Fenton. Teamwork is number one and players never needed any reminders to share the ball with all teammates and give every player an opportunity to score (our team or our opponents). My proudest moments as coach were watching players pass up fast break layups to instead pass to a teammate.”

The unified squads feature students with and without disabilities competing together. The program builds friendships and a sense of school unity and instills a deeper appreciation for the abilities and contributions of all our peers and friends.

“I am so proud of our Unified Squad and all of our student athletes who come together and lift each other up in the spirit of teamwork and athletics,” Superintendent Nelson said. “Our annual match against the police has become one of my favorite community events of the year, and I truly enjoy watching our students compete against our police leaders and school resource officers.”

School Resource Officers Junior Cardoso and Linera Lima and members of the three police departments serving the Old Rochester Regional School District competed for the police.

Old Rochester also wishes to thank Marion Harbormaster Adam Murphy for his hard work organizing this event along with faculty and parent volunteers who gave their time and talents to the effort.

“Our second annual matchup was a huge success, and I am proud to participate in an event that brings our communities together,” said Marion Police Chief Richard Nighelli who acknowledges the School Resource Officers, Rochester Police Chief Robert Small, Jr. and Mattapoisett Police Chief Jason King for their collaboration in bringing the teams together.

After the game, trophies were presented to the Unified Bulldogs team members and to the three police departments. All three departments donated $200 each to the sports program, and nearly $2,700 was raised in ticket, t-shirt and concession sales.

The perfect 9-0 season for Old Rochester Regional’s Unified Bulldogs featured a nail-biting 35-34 win over rival Somerset-Berkley and a 42-35 win over Fairhaven on senior night, as Old Rochester celebrated seniors Traeh Carrington, John Butler, and Jake Newton.
