Town of Dover Breaks Ground on Caryl Community Center Renovation, Expansion

DOVER – The Town of Dover formally broke ground on the long-awaited renovation of the Dover Community Center, the first step toward creating an inclusive, multi-generational building that will serve as a focal point for activities in Town.

DOVER – The Town of Dover formally broke ground on the long-awaited renovation of the Dover Community Center, the first step toward creating an inclusive, multi-generational building that will serve as a focal point for activities in Town.

The Town has been working since 2019 on a plan for the center that will meet the needs of a growing community. Following a comprehensive review of options including both new construction and renovation, townspeople agreed to a plan to renovate and expand the 1910 Building in keeping with the traditional design of Town Hall and the Dover Town Library.

The renovation/addition will create new spaces for community groups and activities. The building’s climate control system will be upgraded to reflect modern green energy standards. Exterior landscaping will create a more welcoming presence.

During a ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 2, Building Committee Chair Ford Spalding thanked the many community members who shared their time and expertise throughout the planning phase.

“We did not arrive at this day alone,” Spalding told about 25 people gathered behind the current building. “We can all agree, it takes a community to build a community center.”

Spalding also thanked current and past Town staff members who provided vital support.

Board of Selectmen Chair Bob Springett recognized Community Center staff for its collaboration with Parks & Recreation and the Council on Aging to make the Center an important part of Dover life.

Springett added that community input played a significant role in guiding Town committees.

“Rather than tell people what we wanted to do, we asked them,” Springett said, “It’s a spectacular day for the town, and a spectacular day for the community. For Ford and I, this has always been about community, and giving the community options to pursue.”

M. O’Connor Contracting is General Contractor. Colliers International is serving as Project Manager. The renovation and expansion were designed by Fennick McCredie Architecture.

The updated Community Center is projected to open in the fall of 2024.
