WESTBOROUGH – Public Health Director Jennifer Sullivan and Emergency Management Director Patrick Purcell report that a sewage overflow may have contaminated Jackstraw Brook.
These overflows can contain stormwater, untreated or partially treated human and industrial waste, toxic materials, and debris. Westborough residents are advised to avoid contact with water from the brook, and to not eat fish caught in brook, until further notice.
The Town first learned about the overflow on Tuesday, June 14, and stopped the overflow at about 12:25 p.m. A preliminary investigation has determined the overflow, stemming from an easement across 7 Garfield Drive, began on June 1. It is estimated that 95,000 gallons of sewage flowed into the brook.
Jackstraw Brook is not a source of drinking water for the town.
The Emergency Management Department and Board of Health will continue to monitor the situation, and provide updates as information becomes available.
